Do We Not Laugh?

The Story:

In May 2019, Loaded Dice Theatre Company presented Do We Not Laugh?, an accessible theatre performance like no other.

Do We Not Laugh? is a unique interpretation of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, based on the devised work of the company’s actors all of whom have an intellectual disability. It challenges perceptions and explores the relationships and emotions of an often forgotten group of people.

Follow the journey of Baz, Portia and Jess in their quest to have a meaningful life and to be happy. This play addresses dilemmas faced by people with intellectual disability in pursing even the smallest of dreams, and challenges the different ways people are supported to achieve them. It explores the role of love and how romantic choices can impact on the pursuit of dreams.

The Production:

This production was commissioned by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Arts Office through an ‘Access All Areas’ award funded by the Arts Council. Accessibility of space, communication and story was been at the heart of the play’s creative process. The production included audio description and subtitles. In addition to this there was a touch tour prior to the performance. Touch Tours are specifically designed to welcome people who will benefit from exploring the stage and handle selected props and costumes before a performance. The performance was ‘relaxed’ to accommodate people with additional sensory and communication needs.

At the heart of Do We Not Laugh? is accessible storytelling. It was written for, and intended to entertain, an audience of all abilities including those who do not have a disability.
